I know Nepali New Year is coming up soon. I am wondering if anyone knows a good place to go on Nepali New Year Eve? Do they have big parties in Kathmandu or is it just another day?

Shipping books for charities...

I know there was a post on the forum about this before but i was wondering if any one knows anything about shipping used books for schools and children's charities to Nepal. I have a LARGE number of books which need shipping but the cost by Australia Post is prohibitive (about $50 a kilo). If anyone has any hints on cheaper options i'd really appreciate it. Secondly if any one knows of a deserving school which could use some children's books in english please let me know because we are looking…See More

Cultural complexity in Nepal

I was recently asked to write about the cultural complexity of Nepal, focusing on Buddhism and Hindu faiths. As i am not Nepali, Hindu or Buddhist, and I have only been living in Nepal for a short time this topic was way out of my area of experience. I am not one to turn away from a challenge so here is my attempt... please feel free to point out any errors as I am new to the topic and this is how we learn! Life in Nepal is a confusing mix of religious, caste, cultural and modern influences.…See More

Nagarkot... we hear there is a nice view

There are mountains behind all that cloud... atleast that is what we were told. A few weeks ago I wrote an article about ‘nearly trekking in Kathmandu Valley’. We walked from Changunarayan to Talkot but didn’t quite make it to Nagarkot.…See More

Bisket Jatra - a destructive New Year

Searching for an apartment to rent in Kathmandu?

No floor covering, no stove or oven, no cabinets, no hot water - Nepali kitchens can be a shock. I read a lot of the Nepal forums and I get asked all the time how to find long term accommodation in Kathmandu. It is difficult being a foreigner and looking for an apartment because there are basically no real estate agents in…See More

Holi festival - I love it.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Nepal the some of the most fascinating and crazy festivals I have ever heard of. In Dhulikehel Gods chase you and steal your money, at Maha Shivaratri every one gets high, Newari girls marry fruit trees, and in some villages the trees marry each other. But for me Holi takes the prize.…See More

Nava Durga Jatra at Dhulikhel - the festival where Gods chase you down for cash

Every town in Nepal has its own special festival or celebration. Yesterday I headed out to Dhulikhel, 30 km SE of Kathmandu, to see their take on the Nava Durga Jatra.  I was told it is Nepal’s version of the Running of the Bulls, though instead of bulls masked Gods, expecting substantial pay offs, chase worshipers through the…See More

Hospitals, Doctors and all things Health

I have been to hospital 3 times while in Nepal. I was wondering if anyone know a good doctor who speaks english? Alternatively any thoughts on good hospitals? When I was in Pokhara I went to one of the hospitals and they charged me over $100 just to stay the night and they bought in a surgical consult. It would be great if we could make a list of places to get good medical care in an emergency. See More

Bratabandha - When boys become men in Kathmandu.

I was visiting a friend’s family when his mother flourished a number of worn pictures of a small boy, wrapped in orange, with big scared eyes, and even bigger ears painfully accentuated by his newly bald head. “He is ready for marriage” she proudly announced. My first impression was that Bratabandha was a haircut that turned boys into men. Bratabandha is a Hindu ceremony where boys, between 8 and 12, take the first steps in learning the traditional laws, ceremonial roles and rituals of their…See More
