Feeding Frogs, 9 Bean Soup, Sacred Lakes, and Cows Leading Spirits

Nepal, I think, has more festivals than any other place on the planet. Yesterday was Janai Purnima, which is a Hindu holiday that doesn't make any sense to me. All I know about it is that it has something to do with a string that gets tied around you and on this day it is replaced. Somehow this is…

Nepali Transporting

Anyone living in Nepal or merely visiting can agree that getting around the country is an adventure in and of itself - not to mention around the narrow, address-less streets of the capital, where mini buses, taxis, motorbikes and pedestrians fight for an ambiguous right of way. After three weeks in Kathmandu, I had my first overnight stay outside the city, and, after narrowly escaping death (or so it felt), I am tickled that I lived to tell the tale. On the 5 hour bus ride from the heart of the… Continue

My first field trip

I've officially been in Nepal for three weeks - just enough time, I feel, to have explored the major attractions of Kathmandu and Patan while still devoting 9-5 of most days in an office drinking milk coffee and staring at my laptop. While there still remains day trips, trekking adventures, crazy muddy streets and glasses of wine on my balcony in my future here, I believe one short trip I took during my first weekend here will end up being one of my favorites, and most… Continue

Patan and Newari Snacks

Today, I went to Patan's Durbar Square, another UNESCO World Heritage Site,

and like Bhaktapur, lots of beautiful historic monuments, stone

sculptures, great metal work, woodcarvings et cætera et cætera. Let's just leave it at that. Look at… Continue

Nepal trip

I recently visited Nepal with my 6 years old daughter. We enjoyed every bit of it.

One of them was visiting the tallest Shivaji's statue. It is 143 ft tall and claimed to be the tallest one in the world.

The statue is beautifully placed on one of the hill in Saanga, Bhaktapur.

You won't miss it from the road towards dhulikhel. The view is

spectacular.

Its breath taking views, meeting with locals, and eating cucumber (Kaakro) with typical (Nepali) achaar (Pickles)… Continue

A Wild Time

A few days ago during my lunch break, I came across an article in the newspaper announcing plans to fund a new “honeymoon suite” for the one-horned rhinos at Nepal’s only zoo. The rhinos, the article explained, are dwindling in population and, believed to be due to a lack of access to any private space, the two currently residing in Kathmandu’s prized rhino real estate… Continue

First trip to Nepal

In February 2010 I took my first trip to Nepal, and thought I'd write a few words about it here. I have several Nepali friends and several more who have spent substantial time there, primarily for Peace Corps service, but for my part it was my first time.

The main reason for my trip was to attend a wedding, and as the wedding and reception were in Kathmandu and separated by a few days - and I only had a week to spend in the country - I did not have time to do a trek, which…

Mountain Flight

So I did this very touristy but awesome thing called a mountain flight where you get in a teeny tiny plane full of Indians and one European

lady and fly over the Himalayas. It was r…

Swing and then Bungy!

The three-hour bus ride takes you to some scenic mountain views before reaching the Last Resort. The 3-hour bumpy bus ride from the city took me to the Last Resort near the Tibetan border where I would be trying the

world's highest swing and the third highest bungy jump. I swung with about 8

seconds freefall and eventually had to face the reality that I needed to climb

back up the mountain to do my bungy jump. After the climb, I was too parched

and…

White Water Rafting in Trisuli

Enjoy a ride from the city about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic to get to the starting point for rafting. The bus finally stops in front of a food stall. There is a changing room on the second floor,

and we picked up our paddle, life vest and helmet. The lead guide then explains

how to put on the outfit. After walking 5 minutes to the shoreline, we finally

saw the boats that were being prepped with guides already on each boat.…

Monkey Temple?

I went to Swayambhunath, a.k.a. the “Monkey Temple” Saturday morning and

I know usually, for the 'full experience', you have to walk more than

three hundred steps up but come on it's too humid and honestly, I was

only there for the monkeys. I don't want to say that the whole

experience escaped me, I mean yeah the sights were nice and the temples

were pretty and I took lots of pictures of things...but as I walked

around this UNESCO labeled World Heritage site,… Continue
