Moving to Kathmandu

Starting this blog to document my travels to Nepal and hopefully connect with some other expats living in Kathmandu. I am moving in March to Kathmandu to begin volunteering at a childrens' orphanage. I am a graduate student from the US... having just finished my Masters in Education and planning to attend law school. My interests lie in international education equity issues and women's rights. That is largely what brings me to Nepal. My initial intent is to stay for 3 months, perhaps longer. I… Continue

Scams, safety and other stuff

These kids seemed really cute till they tried to run off with my camera.

I have found Nepal t o be pretty safe. I've never had any problems but I get scammed every time I come to Nepal. I don't actually mind, I find it a bit of a game trying to avoid paying 5 times the local price or going the long way in a taxi. Everytime I visit i make a little mistake, I forget and leave my window down in… Continue

CAVES OF CHOBHAR

There was a festival at the temple on top of Chobhar hill, and from the road below hordes of devotees could be seen making their way up to it. The day was clear and sunny, and one could look at a part of Kathmandu ’s sprawl with a glimpse of snowy peaks beyond the hills. The winter sun was mild and the breeze from the north stirred the leaves of trees and grasses. Cars,…

Day Trips from Kyanjin Gompa; Langshisha Kharka & Tsergo Ri

I've already described the basic trek up to Kyanjin Gompa in the Langtang valley in this post so I'm not going to discuss it again in detail. The main difference was that this trip was done in October, so it was drier, the scenery was much less green, and the river was… Continue

Back from Base Camp: Why the Everest Region is the Definitive Trek in Nepal

When people have asked me which of the classic treks they should do during their trip to Nepal I have often floundered, as each offers something unique that might appeal to some people more than others. After this last trip though I will definitively say that a trek from Jiri to Everest including Gokyo is the best trek in Nepal. The Jiri to Lukla section of the trail lets you see first hand the villages of the middle hills, cultural components that are lacking in the heavily traveled…
