Pilgrims of West Tibet

With a slow, tentative effort I was down, mules included; though I’d no idea how? My feet and ankles were swollen; every part of my body ached from the tension. I was dusty, knackered, dishevelled but I brimmed with a deep sense of pride. After navigating the ancient salt route, I was stood at…

Trekking up to Dhampus

This is my first blog ever. I hope you enjoy reading my day to day trekking adventures up from pohkara to Dhampus.

Day 1

Woke up this morning at 6 am like clockwork and continue my last minute packing from the night before. I get showered and changed and proceed to put on my lap top on. I think to myself...how lucky I am to have electricity this morning and have internet access too. I tidy the apartment to the best of my ability before heading downstairs…

Trek the Hidden Himalayas

So you think you know about trekking in Nepal? Well, let me tell you about a fabled land, a land hidden deep within the Himalayas. A magical, secluded land situated in the highest, most Northern district of Nepal... Let me tell you about Humla.

Many have…

Planning to fly the NRA (Never Regular Airline)?

Nepali Royal Airlines (NRA) should be avoided at all costs. There is simply no price to pay for an airline which takes to the sky whenever it feels like it. Quite simply, their promise as the only airline to fly passengers direct to a country like Malaysia, is full of hot air. More often than not passengers are made to transit hours on end, and sometimes days.

In fact, a confirmed flight with a nine hour transit to Singapore or Thailand via Silk Air or Thai Airways  -as opposed to an…

Day Trips from Kyanjin Gompa; Langshisha Kharka & Tsergo Ri

I've already described the basic trek up to Kyanjin Gompa in the Langtang valley in this post so I'm not going to discuss it again in detail. The main difference was that this trip was done in October, so it was drier, the scenery was much less green, and the river was… Continue

Back from Base Camp: Why the Everest Region is the Definitive Trek in Nepal

When people have asked me which of the classic treks they should do during their trip to Nepal I have often floundered, as each offers something unique that might appeal to some people more than others. After this last trip though I will definitively say that a trek from Jiri to Everest including Gokyo is the best trek in Nepal. The Jiri to Lukla section of the trail lets you see first hand the villages of the middle hills, cultural components that are lacking in the heavily traveled…

Dohori Folk Singing

Dohori Folk Singing

More like a flirtatious call-and-response, yo momma Bollywood pop battle, than the folk tradition it is, Dohori began as and continues to be a way that men and women celebrate Nepali festivals. Thankfully, for the festival oblivious among us, you can also catch Dohori nightly in many Kathmandu clubs and bars. In addition, if you’re really lucky, you too can have your photo taken with a Nepali…

Feeding Frogs, 9 Bean Soup, Sacred Lakes, and Cows Leading Spirits

Nepal, I think, has more festivals than any other place on the planet. Yesterday was Janai Purnima, which is a Hindu holiday that doesn't make any sense to me. All I know about it is that it has something to do with a string that gets tied around you and on this day it is replaced. Somehow this is…
