Adventures Upon Arrival: Paragliding, Durbar Square, Kumari, Stupas, Monkeys, and Cremations

Day 3 in KTM: ParaglidingToday was the day I planned a half-day excursion to paraglide over the Kathmandu Valley… This was also the day I also got waaaay more than I paid for. I was picked up at 7:30 in the morning by my booking agent who dropped me off with the paragliding company well over an hour too early because he needed to make it to a wedding… said he would send someone back to pick me up in the afternoon around 1pm. Well, that isn’t really how things worked out but I am beginning to…See More

20 day countdown and my adventure begins...

I am getting very excited (and a bit nervous) to board my LAX to KTM flight in 20 days... have spent the past few weeks trying to secure a place to live, secure my visa, getting all necessary gear and immunizations, as well as planning my first month of travel and sight seeing before I start working at the orphanage. I also recently found out that I have been recommended by the Institute of International Education for a Fulbright Grant to Nepal from the State Dept here, so there is a chance I…See More

Anyone know about shipping items to Kathmandu?

I am a graduate student who has arranged to live in KTM and volunteer at a children's orphanage beginning this March for about 3 months. The children at the home are in need of many different items for which I have begun fundraising/collecting here at home. I have arranged to have an entire middle school participate in a fundraiser/donation drive for the home. Many of my family and friends also want to donate goods that the children need. For this reason, it is likely that I will end up with…See More

Air Pollution levels in Kathmandu?

Hello All,I had dinner with a friend last night that heard I was going to be living in KTM for a while then proceeded to scare the cr*p out of me regarding pollution levels in the city. I have heard it was somewhat bad but he said that his friend got very sick with a horrible respiratory infection for almost 3 months after just visiting KTM for a few days.Does anyone have advice for how best to cope as a new comer with air pollution? Does anyone wear masks to help filter? How bad are pollution…See More

Recommendations for Cell Phones in Nepal?

Hello All, I am going to be living in Kathmandu for 3-4 months from March 1st on... wanting to look into how to get a cell phone cheaply that works. I have read different things online and was left a little confused. I have a Blackberry phone with tmobile here, will it be possible to get it "unlocked" and use it in KTM? Or, if I just decide to buy a prepaid phone does anyone have a recommendation? How good is cellular coverage throughout most of the country? Many Thanks for any advice! See More

Moving to Kathmandu

Starting this blog to document my travels to Nepal and hopefully connect with some other expats living in Kathmandu. I am moving in March to Kathmandu to begin volunteering at a childrens' orphanage. I am a graduate student from the US... having just finished my Masters in Education and planning to attend law school. My interests lie in international education equity issues and women's rights. That is largely what brings me to Nepal. My initial intent is to stay for 3 months, perhaps longer. I…See More

Hi Brittany,

I'm currently interning in KTM, and was looking for language lesson via the internet and that's how I came across your blog. Just wondering if you had reached KTM yet, and if you had had any luck finding lessons. Anyway, I'm a legal masters graduate for the UK, out here until May, hoping to do everest base camp at some point.

Most people you meet in Kathmandu are only there for brief spells (they're often heading on to other parts of asia or going trekking, so it's nice to find people volunteering to make more permanent friends. I've made friends with a Canadian girl who is also volunteering. Well anyway, if you fancy meeting up for a coffee, send me a message and we can exchange emails.

If not, have a great stay in KTM, and you must visit the Garden of Dreams, Thamel, when it is sunny - fanstastic garden, with a great restaurant.
